Auction Time Has Arrived

Wow I can't believe the project is over and the time to bid on the altars is here. There are many different talented artists this year and I can't believe that I am among them! Head over and look at all the amazing altars. Then bid on your favorite.

Remember this is all to benefit the Oaxacan Streetchildren Organization. A very good cause.

It has been such a pleasure and learning experience working on this altar. I let the thing I love the most be my inspiration and it has produced my very first altar.

To my partner in shrine, thanks so much for "making" me do this. I love you so much!

Close to the Finish Line

The cigar box shrine is getting close to the finish line. The inside is coming along, and the back is done. There have been a few changes from my original concept but I am liking how it is turning out.

Here is the inside with the bright sun. When I think of the smiling sun the only face that comes to mind is my daughters. So for this project she is my smiling sun.

The inside is still lacking and I am not sure what to add to this. Ideas?

Here is the embroidered back of the box. The next step is to find some images that this song brings to mind and add them to the out sides of the box.

The auction is right around the corner and each artist will have their own page on the website. When ours is up I will let you all know!

Yellow and Feathers

Miss us? Here is a quick update on the progress of our "3 Little Birds" cigar box altar. For the outside of the box I am going for the look of the front of a house. And since my husband refused to let me paint our house yellow I am painting my cigar box "house" a nice bright sunny yellow! Here is the first coat. Looks like it will take a few coats to get the color I want and then the windows and doors go on.

On the inside of the box I really went with the bird theme and found some feathers to add to the inside doors. I figured with all the bright yellow on the outside some neutral tones on the doors would work.

Next step is to somehow add the beautiful blue satiny cloth for the sky and come up with a tree and nest scene inside. With the deadline quickly approaching expect more updates soon!

3 completed birds

All the birds are done! They took a lot longer than I expected them to but they came out way better than I expected them too.

Here is bird #2. My daughter was the muse behind the colors. They are bright and light just like my Sophia. A splash of red for her passion and love of life, a blue streak for her tom-boyness. Plus purple is her favorite color.

Bird #3 was the biggest of the 3 birds and the one I called the Momma bird. Yes this bird was me. Red for for the undying love I have for my family.

And here is the whole piece of fabric done.

Next step? Get this onto the box!

Coloring in the birds

The ideas has been steady flowing since I have received the box. Artful Chica and I knew we wanted to incorporate the lyrics into the box so I decided to embroider them onto fabric. The first step was to find the lyrics, then find a font. After those 2 tasks were done I set to work at embroidering.

Originally I wanted to do all the letters but after the first line it was not looking nice. Instead I just highlighted each letter with some color.

Then of course I had to add 3 birds. For the color of this first bird I thought of my husband.

The second bird is done and was colored in with colors that remind me of my daughter. The third and biggest bird is the Momma bird and I am using colors that reflect me. More photos to come soon!

An Artist Blooms

At some point,I remember PR MOM saying that she did not consider herself an artist, although she is a photographer.
The last few days she has sent me picture texts on what she is working on.
I have to admit that it has been

 wonderful and amazing

  watching our journey unfold.

There is something sacred about watching an artist unfurl her wings

slowly~gently

not quit sure if she can fly.

You have the wings
and
You can fly!

Painting Birdies

One of the reasons that I love the "3 Little Birds" theme is because in our house 3 is "the magic number" because we are a little family of 3. We have had no luck in trying to expand our family, so we have embraced the number 3.

Although this project is a collaboration between Artful Chica and I, I wanted my family of 3 to be involved in some way. So we each took one of the birds that Artful Chica made, and painted.

And here are our 3 little lovely birds that are now a representation of my lovely little family.
